Bangalore Palace

Comfort Inn President - Ahmedabad

Bangalore- the city of gardens - is a fusion of the old world traditional charm and the modern global culture. The city has a holistic tourism appeal, ranging from temples to museum and palaces to gardens. Bangalore Palace is one of the prime tourist attractions of Bangalore.

The Bangalore Palace was built by the then King of Mysore, Chamaraja Wodeyar. He bought the land from Rev. Garret and build a majestic palace on it, in 1884. The architecture represents Tudor style. The construction of this palace is inspired by the Windsor Castle of England. The palace is situated right in the heart of the city, and is surrounded by very beautiful gardens. It once covered a vast open area that has been reduced today.

The palace, which is spread across an area of 430 acres and is situated amidst wonderful gardens, is famous for its elegant woodwork, paintings and carvings. This palace has fortified towers with Gothic windows, which adds to its regal charm. There is an exquisite door panel that leads to the grandiose settings inside. The interiors comprise of awesome floral motifs, mouldings, cornices and relief paintings on the ceilings.

It is believed that the construction of the Bangalore Palace had cost a princely sum of over 1 lakh rupees and the land did cost only ten lakh rupees! Though it sounds absurdly low by today’s standards, but we should remember that in those days 1 lakh was truly a big amount. Today the huge mansion stands on 45,000 sq. ft. and reflects uncommon majesty. The palace ground which is located between Sadashivanagar and Jayamahal is now used as a venue for various exhibitions, cultural programmes and concerts. However, the time has taken its toll. The palace, which was losing its original elegance because of the leaking ceilings, dilapidated walls, creaky doors, and the chipped furniture is now being renovated by Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wodeyar, the current scion of the illustrious Wodeyar family, who were the rulers of Mysore.

The palace will be cosmetically reconstructed. Already the woodwork has undergone renovation, and the ballroom has been redone.
