Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium

Comfort Inn President - Ahmedabad

Among the tourist attractions in Bangalore, the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium is a place you must visit. This place is a treasure-trove of factual knowledge on astronomy. This can be a fascinating experience for the children and grown ups as well.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium was founded in 1989, by the Bangalore City Corporation. In 1992, the administration of the planetarium was entrusted to an autonomous body, the Bangalore Association for Science Education (BASE), which is dedicated to disseminate knowledge and information about science among student and laymen. BASE has established a Science Centre on the premises of the planetarium, which is serving as a centre for non formal education. Furthermore, a Science Park is also been constructed around the planetarium.

The sky theatre is the main attraction of the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium. The sky theatre inside the planetarium has a sitting capacity of 225. The dome of the sky theatre has a diameter of 15 m and is worth a visit. The projector projects the sky and the constellation pictures onto the dome. There are two shows conducted daily which reveals the mysteries of the universe. The shows use paintings, cartoons, video clippings, and computer animations freely. These shows offer clear and interesting educational accounts of science, and help you gain an understanding of the cultural aspects of various countries, as the shows in the sky theatre effectively blends science with art and culture.

There are many other interesting things in the planetarium. It has an exhibition hall that displays the versatile personality of the all-time great scientist, Albert Einstein. There are giant pictures of various galaxies on display in the planetarium. The set of painting and sculptures are on display on a permanent basis. The planetarium has a weighing scale on which you can obtain your weight on every planet. At the exhibition you can buy science kit, books, telescope, models, and astro-photos.

The Science Park built around the planetarium, is a platform to learn the elements of science in an entertaining manner. There are various scientific activities that are carried at the Jawarhalal Nehru Planetarium. The popular activity ‘Know Your Stars’ is carried in association with Association of Bangalore Amateur Astronomers.

The instructive activity ‘Know Your Stars’ starts with a lecture, in which the sky of that night is simulated. It teaches you to identify the various planets, constellations and stars. Every visitor is provided with a star chart of the day. They also teach you how to read the chart. Lastly amateur astronomers conduct a session on star watching. There are arrangements for watching the comets, planetary transits and eclipses. There is also provision of portable telescopes to watch the eclipses.
