The would be 'life line' of the capital of India, Delhi Metro is the best gift given to over 14 million people of this region by the Indian federal government and Delhi state government at the dawn of 21st century. With the completion of all its lines, commuting in the National Capital Region will just be fun in the state-of-art air-conditioned coaches of Delhi Metro unlike traveling in overcrowded buses or in capital's manic three-wheeler scooter taxis. Apart from reducing commuting timings and massive traffic congestion on the capital's roads, Delhi Metro< will cut pollution in Delhi by over 50%. One of the biggest infrastructure projects undertaken in India since the British built New Delhi, Delhi Metro is equipped with the most modern communication and train control system ensuring security, reliability and safety in train operations, as equipment have been taken from leading manufacturers around the world including France, Sweden, Japan and South Korea.

Beautifully designed, all the metro stations are spacious, well lit with the typical international look, and attended by well-behaved and helpful staff. They have computerized ticketing systems and automatic turnstiles operated by 'smart-cards' and tokens. For the convenience of commuters of all ages, lifts and escalators have been installed at all metro stations, as well as feeder buses are operating for particular stations.

Due to all the present advantages of the metro network as well as its special feature to integrate with other modes of public transport, the government plans to invest 180 billion rupees by 2010 to extend the network to 115.4 kilometers, to change not only the face of Delhi and its transport system, but also the capital's work culture.

The whole project has been divided into two phases. Phase I of the project is near completion with tracks laid underground, at grade, as well as elevated for smooth functioning.
