Beaches of Goa

Goa has a few of the most beautiful beaches in India. The name by itself conjures up the image of a tropical paradise with vast expanse of sandy beaches facing the enticing azure blue Arabian Sea and the palm fronds swaying gently in the breeze. For over a couple of decades, Goa has remained one of the hottest tourist destinations in India. The lovely emerald green shores, white or golden sand on the beach, the lovely tropical settings, the verdant canopy of coconut palms, vast expanse of paddy fields and the Portuguese churches and mansions, the remnants of the colonial days, make Goa all the more special.

The beaches of Goa are located mainly around Mapusa, Panaji and Margao. A few of the most popular beaches in Goa are Calangute Beach, Baga Beach, Anjuna Beach, Dona Paula Beach and Colva Beach. These beaches are well connected to the Dabolim airport. They are also connected to major railway stations in Goa. Taxis or auto-rickshaws can be hired from the airport or the railway stations to reach one of these beaches.

Of these beaches, Calangute is also known as the Queen among the beaches of Goa. Now it is one of the busiest beaches in Goa. It was a secluded beach when the hippies discovered it in the 70s. It has gained popularity, ever since. Besides the usual beach activities of sunbathing and swimming in the sea, Calangute Beach also has certain facilities for water sports. The tourists can indulge themselves in parasailing, water-skiing, wind surfing and other water sports on the Calangute Beach. Calangute has a lively nightlife with its own share of nightclubs and pubs. But the parties are rather modest compared to the wild parties at Anjuna Beach.

Baga Beach is almost an extension of Calangute Beach. This is a rocky beach, located amongst exotic locales of the emerald canopy of wooded headland. The beach has quite a peaceful, secluded and less crowded atmosphere, as compared to Calangute. Baga beach too has its share of water sports facilities. These days many tourists are interested in such adventure sports. The beach is also famous for its lively nightlife with most vibrant of the parties being held in Baga. Most of the tourists come down to Baga with the intention of taking part in these wild night parties.

Yet another popular tourist destination among the beaches of Goa is the Anjuna Beach. This charming beach is very well known for its full moon beach parties and Wednesday flea markets. It is the venue of wildest of rave parties organized in Goa. The foreign tourists love to take part in the tantalising full moon parties held on the beach, with the accompaniment of trance music. Anjuna is a widely favoured hippie haunt as well. The flea markets held on the beach, on Wednesdays, are quite popular among the tourists. These markets are such a success that many beaches have now started having weekly markets, in the steps of Anjuna.

Dona Paula is also one of famous beaches in Goa that has a poignant, alluring, romantic myth associated with it. It is a beautiful beach with a riveting view of Mormugao harbour. Besides the beach, other places worth a visit in Dona Paula are the Reis Magos Church, Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary and the National Oceanography Institute.

Colva Beach is one of the popular beaches of Goa, which started gaining popularity only recently. It is a beach well equipped for the influx of tourists, with luxurious hotels and resorts to stay at and nice restaurants to dine out from. But Colva Beach is rather characterized by its throbbing nightlife with the hippest of parties. Goa has its share of lesser-known calm serene beaches too. The quieter among the beaches of Goa are the Candolim Beach, Palolem Beach, Mobor Beach, Varca Beach and Majorda Beach. They are ideal for spending some quality time, immersed in solitude and tranquillity, while listening to the music of the waves.
