The Sri Kamakshi Temple was situated in Salcete Taluka on Raja in the earlier times. In recent times, the temple has been shifted to Shiroda village which is located in Ponda. The idol of Goddess Kamakshi is supposed to be from Guwahati in Assam. The old name of the temple is Shivagram. You will find many temples in the vicinity of this temple. One of the main temples is the temple devoted to Rayeshwara. Besides this temple, you will also find temples devoted to Sri Laxminarayana, Sri Mahadeshwar, Sri Shanthadurga and Kalabhairav.

The temple boasts of a simple edifice with simple designs and patterns. The simplicity, charm and elegance of the temple draw tourists towards it. The temple also offers excellent views of the striking surroundings and natural beauty of the city. The Shukla Panchami and Vadya Chaturdashi are the important festivals celebrated here. The Palakhi of Goddess Kamakshi starts from the temple on the day of Shukla Panchami. A palkhi of Sri Rayeshwar is also a much awaited event. It commences on the Vadya Chaturdashi. The jatra or folk theatre that takes place on Shivratri and Navratri is a major attraction among all the tourists and the devotees alike.

The Sri Kamakshi Temple is at a distance of about 12 km from Kavalem. You can reach the temple with the help of the local means of transport like buses or taxis. There are various buses available which take you on a tour to all the temples of the city. You can also use private transport or hire cars. So make sure that you visit the temple while enjoying a stay in the city. It will surely make your journey more memorable.
