The Sri Shantadurga Temple is one of the much popular temples of Goa. It is located near the base of the Kavalem hills.

The Sri Shantadurga Temple is devoted to Goddess Shantadurga. She is renowned as the Goddess of peace. It is believed that once there was a quarrel between Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Goddess Shantadurga resolved their fight and spread peace. She took Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva on her right and left palms respectively. The temple is known by various names. Sateri, Thamai, Bhumka and Adimaya are the different names of the temple. People use these names according to the areas where the temple is found.

In Goa, you will find three temples which are dedicated to Goddess Shantadurga. This striking temple has superb structural design. It was constructed by Shahu Maharaj, the Maharaj of Satara in the seventeenth century. The temple also houses other Gods in the three temples located near by. The temple is crowned with a roof in the shape of a pyramid. The tiles of the temple have been built out of granite. The main image of the Goddess in the temple has snakes in each of her hands which are symbols of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

You will find a Dipa Stambha, adorned with beautiful lamps glittering and shining adding to the beauty and simplicity of the Sri Shantadurga Temple. Apart from the Dipa Stambha, you will also find a large tank in the vicinity of the temple. The numerous fine agrashalas draw numerous devotees and are very popular. Agrashalas are guest houses of the temple for the convenience of the devotees. The devotees can enjoy a comfortable say in these agrashalas and also get the satisfaction of being in the shelter of the Goddess. The temple also has a Devasthan where marriage ceremonies are held.

The fest of Jatra which commences sometime during December is a much awaited event. This jatra pulls all the tourists and devotees who come here wholeheartedly and soak in the festive spirit.
