With its high mountains that are completely wrapped in snow for the best parts of the year, the pristine charm of its sylvan environment, the apple orchards, the little hamlets and villages on the laps of green hills, Himachal Pradesh does not shy away from taking your breathe. The hutments that are built for the tourists and the absolutely beautiful scenery, and also the snow clad mountains give the state a distinct European look. The tourism of Himachal Pradesh presents an array of wonderful options to explore. The city of Shimla, which is the capital of the state, is a much favoured destination among the tourists. Besides Shimla, the major tourist attractions of Himachal Pradesh are Kullu and Manali, Rohtang Pass, Chamba, Dharamshala, Kufri, Chail and the quaint hill station of Dalhousie.

The people of Himachal Pradesh have the distinction of keeping their customs and traditions intact. The people enjoy their own traditional fairs and festivals that are filled with dances and music. These colourfully euphoric fairs and festivals can be tourist attractions of this state in their own right.

The state has various year-round activities that are suited to the climatic conditions as well as the tourists' interests in Himachal. They include golfing, skiing, fishing, mountaineering and trekking. The state is a major tourist destination not only because of its beauty, but also because of the range of adventure sports options that a tourist can enjoy in his Himachal holidays. It is one of the most sought after adventure sport tourist destinations in the whole country. With large number of high mountains and rocky hills, the state welcomes a galore of tourists who want a taste of adventure tourism. A cross country trek through the hilly mountains and green forests takes you very close to the breathtaking sceneries.

The tourism of Himachal Pradesh also includes ice skating. There are a number of spots in the state of Himachal Pradesh that are always used for ice skiing. Shimla and the Kufri Pass are known for ice skiing, but the major destinations for ice skiing are Manali and Rohtang Pass. The Kufri Pass, situated at a height of 2501 meters, also has a scenic resort for the tourists. The pass commands excellent ice-clad open space that inspires all skiing enthusiasts.

With vast slopes covered with thick ice, the Rohtang Pass is a heaven for the ice skiing beginners. Recently a new ski terrain has been developed here, which has given an impetus to adventure lovers. It is also one of the safe spots for skiing. Situated at a height of 3978 meters and 51 kms from the beautiful town of Manali, this spot is known for its wonderful natural scenery. However, at the same time, Rohtang Pass can be a preferred destination for the professional skiers. Here the steep slopes can catch the imagination of any skier. Besides skiing, Rohtang Pass can present wonderful trekking options.

The summer of the state is extremely wet and has rainfall up to 185 cms. The winter is very cold and is laden with heavy snowfall. Thus the best recommended time to visit the state is from May to October.
