India became an independent nation on 15th August 1947, after a freedom struggle against British colonial rule. India

Administrative divisions: India has 28 states and 7 union territories. Each of these regional administrative divisions has an elected government headed by a chief minister. A Governor is appointed by the President of India, as the symbolic head of the federal authority in each state.

28 states: Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttaranchal, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal

7 union territories: Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Delhi, Lakshadweep, Pondicherry.

Government type: Federal republic, Parliamentary Democracy

Head of government: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh (since May 2004)

Head of state: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam (since 26 July 2002); Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat (since 19 August 2002)

Franchise: Universal - every Indian citizen gets the right to vote when he or she reaches 18 years of age.

Elections: Elections for the lower house of parliament are held every 5 years. The party or coalition with the largest number of seats, is invited the President to form the government. General Elections for the national parliament were last held in mid 2004.
