The basic significance of Bhai Dooj is to depict and revitalize the bond between a brother and a sister. Various historical stories are related to this festival. Its origin is sometimes related to the stories of Yamraj and his sister Yamuna and sometimes to the legendary tales of Lord Krishna and his sister Subhadra. Bhai Dooj is and will always remain a significant festival in the Indian culture. On this auspicious occasion sister apply ‘tilak’ on their brother’s forehead. Thalis are decorated with mithai, batashas, roli, rice, coconut along with a lighted puja lamp. Gifts and sweets are exchanged subsequently. A sister not only showers their love and affection on their brother but, also prays for their welfare and prosperity. The brother in turn vows to protect his sister and stand by her through thick and thin.
Today, the celebration has acquired a new trend with the launch of various internet sites. Sending E-cards across the country to celebrate this joyous occasion has become a common and popular phenomenon. It helps in establishing the bond between brothers and sisters who are separated by distance and who cannot possibly meet up to celebrate this festive occasion.
