About Buddha Purnima

Buddha Purnima is one of the most important festivals of the Buddhists. It is the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha and the festival is held in high spirit all over the world. On this day Buddhists commemorates the three most important events in the life of Gautama Buddha; his birth, enlightenment and death. All the three events occurred on the same day i.e. in the full moon day of Vaishak. Hence, the festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm on this day. The day corresponds with the month of April-May. Buddha Purnima is a sacred festival for the Buddhist and is also known by the name of Buddha Jayanti Festival.

Significance of Buddha Purnima

The significance of Buddha Purnima lies in the fact that it is a Thrice-blessed day for the Buddhists. The three events that occurred in the life of Gautama Buddha give a special significance to this festival. According to the legend of Buddha Purnima, Buddha’s wife Yashodhara, his first disciple Ananda, his charioteer Channa and horse Kantaka were all born on the sacred day of Buddha Jayanti. Hence, the day has immense significance for the Buddhists.

Rituals and Celebrations of Buddha Purnima

On this day pilgrims from all over the world visit the Bodh Gaya to witness the Buddha Purnima celebrations. There are prayer meetings, sermons on the life of Gautam Buddha, non-stop recitation of the Buddhist scriptures, meditation by monks and devotees, processions and others. The Buddhist bathes and wears white clothes. Incense, flowers, candles and fruits are offered to the image of Lord Buddha. Buddhist offer alms to the monks or even invites them to their house. On this occasion they eat kheer, which is made of rice, milk and sugar. Birds are freed from the cages and most importantly the Bodhi tree is honored. The branches of the tree are decorated with garlands and flags and lamps are lighted around the tree. The fair at Lumbini is a grand affair. Lumbini is the birth place of Lord Buddha.

The main centers of celebrating Buddha Purnima are Bodh Gaya in Bihar, Samath in Uttar Pradesh and other place includes Ladakh, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh.
