About Id-ul-Fitr

An important occasion of the Islamic calendar is the festival of Id-ul-Fitr. The festival marks the end of the Ramzan period, which is not only the ninth month in the Muslim calendar but, it is also the Islamic month of fasting. The festival is thus, celebrated on the first day of Shaw’waal, which is the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. ‘Fitr’ means to break and the festival signifies the breaking of the fasting period. Id-ul-Fitr is basically a festival of joy, reunion and thanksgiving to the Almighty. It is commonly referred to as the Eid and is the most important and biggest festival of the Muslim. Many Hindus in India also take part in the celebration.

Significance of Id-ul-Fitr

The significance of the Id-ul-Fitr can be understood from the underlying meaning it holds for all the Muslim community. Id-ul-Fitr signifies the breaking of the fasting period of Ramzan. The celebration last for three days and is also referred to as ‘Choti Eid’. According to the historical legend, it was Prophet Mohammad who declared the last day of Ramzan as Id-ul-Fitr and as the Muslim day of rejoicing and feasting. It is a common believe for the Muslims that fasting will bring them closer to Allah and he will be forgiven for all his sins and attain salvation in the process. People celebrate Id-ul-Fitr to fortify the feeling of brotherhood.

Rituals and Celebrations of Id-ul-Fitr

On the occasion of Id-ul-Fitr, people wake up early, dress in their best attire after taking a bath. Men apply perfume and Muslim women apply henna on their hands and adorn themselves with jewelry. They gather in the mosque or a large open area and special prayers are offered. They then greet each other and distribute sweets among friends and relatives. Muslim also pays a visit to the graveyard on this day. The custom is known as Ziyarat-al-qubur where they pay their respect to the departed soul. These activities continue for three whole days.
