About Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival that is dedicated to symbolize the pure and enduring bond between a brother and a sister. It not only glorifies but, also fortifies the relationship shared between a brother and a sister. It is celebrated extensively in the full moon month of Shravana, which coincides with the month of July-August. The name ‘Raksha Bandhan’ itself suggests that it is ‘a bond of protection’. Raksha Bandhan is also known as Rakhi. Sisters tie a sacred thread of Rakhi round the wrist of their brothers and pray for their long life. Brothers in turn commit themselves, to stand by their sisters in times of all their needs.

Raksha Bandhan is a festival of the North and Western region of India and the festival has great significance for the Hindu community.

Significance of Raksha Bandhan

The origin and history of Raksha Bandhan is not very clear and various stories related to the Indian history and Hindu mythologies are usually associated with it. However, the festival of Rakhi was celebrated since time immemorial and since then, it has undergone a sea change. Initially Rakhi was celebrated for protection purpose and anyone; whether a mother, wife daughter could tie the thread. Today, Raksha Bandhan is observed in different styles and traditions and is mainly observed to celebrate the everlasting relationships between a brother and a sister. It is a festival that reunites families and loved ones.

Rituals and Celebrations of Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan is eagerly looked forward by all brothers and sisters in India. Sisters fast the whole day, till all the rituals of Rakhi are dutifully performed. Rituals comprises of applying tilak on the brother’s forehead, tying the sacred thread and performing arti. In the end sweets are offered and gifts are exchanged. Sisters offer their genuine love and prayers for the welfare of their brother. Sisters are pampered with the best rakhi gifts and are showered with love, affection and blessings.

Today, with the proliferation of the various internet sites, e-rakhis are posted by those who are not able to meet each other. They form a major trend of communicating the love, affection, feelings and emotions of the siblings.
