The fort is imposing and regal in its appearance, but its rugged exteriors are in sharp contrast to its interiors, which are warm and comforting. Paintings depicting various hunting scenes, exotic murals and various antiques adorn the walls, which are covered with intricate carving; mosaic and minute mirror works that make the halls look very majestic and imperial.
The fort is essentially a military bastion and its enormous walls can provide ample security to the residents within the ramparts of the fort. It is a huge structure built in white marble and red sandstone, and has four sections. The main gate called Suraj Pol leads to the Jaleb Chowk (central courtyard). On the right is a narrow staircase, leading to the famous Shila Devi temple.
