Shopping in Jaipur can be an adventurous option. Many tourists enjoy hunting through the colourful and chaotic streets of Jaipur, shopping for souvenirs like silver jewellery, precious and semi-precious stones such as diamonds, topaz and emeralds, embroidered clothing and quilts, block-printed textiles, lacquered brass work, leather footwear, miniature marble carvings and blue potteries. Watching the skilful artisans at work is also a revelation in itself.
Shopping in Jaipur can be done in specialty markets, general interest markets and government approved state emporiums. The major bazaars are along Jauhari Bazaar, Badi Chaupar and M.I. Road.
The specialty Jauhari Market has jewels with unparallel cut, polish and designs, and one can see the celebrated minakars, kunda workers, gem-cutters, and ornament makers at work here. One can buy quality silverware at shops lining the workshops like Gopalji Ka Rasta and Haldion Ka Rasta. Besides jewellery, the market is also famous for tie and dye saris and dress materials.
Shopping in Jaipur is incomplete without shopping for handicrafts. Minarkari, textiles in tie and dye (bandhani), Sanganeri and Bagru block prints can make your shopping in Jaipur an experience. The finest stores are next to Jauhari Bazaar and Badi Chaupar.
Larger establishments at Sanganer produce the famous block-printed textiles and have dozens of workshops. Amber Road between Zorawar Gate and Holiday Inn sells fine hand-block prints, blue pottery, carpets and antiques.
Blue pottery is extremely popular here. It is made from quartz stone and is crafted into surahis, pots, ear-rings, soap dishes, door knobs, mugs and jugs. Carved brass and marble antiques figure high on the list of the shoppers. While shopping in Jaipur you will definitely come across these.
There are many shops opposite the Hawa Mahal and along the MI Road. They are famous for handmade quilts -each weighing only a hundred grams. Elegant craftsmanship and artistic excellence is portrayed in these creations, displayed at the government emporiums and retail shops, like the Handloom House, Khadi Ghar and Rajasthan Government Handicraft Emporium (having fixed prices). Jaipur is also famous for its offering of traditional sweetmeats that can be found everywhere.
Bapu Bazaar and Nehru Bazaar are popular places for shopping in Jaipur. Here you can get textiles, local perfumes, sandals, etc. You can watch artists doing firsthand work at the Tripolia Bazaar and the Chaura Rasta.
Other places famous for particular items are Maniharon Ka Rasta (lac bangles), Khajanewalon Ka Rasta (marble carving), Saganer village (block printing, hand-made paper, blue pottery), Kishanpol Bazar (tie and dye textiles), Hawa Mahal (lac bangles, textiles), and Ramganj Bazar (jutis). All shops offer varying prices and the best way to buy the souvenirs is by bargaining.
Jaipur is a shopper's paradise and anyone coming to this charming city cannot leave without buying a fascinating memento or two.
