Also known as the Fort of Victory, the colossal Jaigarh Fort is the best of the three forts overlooking the city of Jaipur. Jaigarh Fort in Jaipur is built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh in the year 1726, to bolster the defence of the area, Jaigarh Fort is the best example of a full-fledged citadel. No palaces or other delicate structures have been built inside the simple looking fort by the successors. The architecture of the magnificent fort makes clear Sawai Jai Singh's intentions of using the fort purely as a military structure.
It is one of the few military monuments of medieval India preserved in almost intact form, containing residential structures, a granary, a well-planned cannon foundry, several temples, a tall tower and a giant mounted cannon-the Jai Ban (Jaivana) which is the largest cannon of its type in the world. Built in the year 1720 in the foundry of Jaigarh, the canon is one of the chief attractions of this jagged military structure today. It is believed that the huge cannon had the potential of causing immense damage if fired upon approaching enemies, for it required a minimum of 100 kgs of gunpowder for a single shot. The canon has a 20 feet long barrel!
One of the most massive forts in the history of India, the imposing structure is located some 12 kilometres away from the main city of Jaipur. Nestled amidst rock-strewn, thorny scrub-covered hills, its forbidding stone ramparts are visible from the town. A steep road leads up to the main gate of the fort, the Dungar Darwaza, from where the view is breathtaking. Another arresting feature of the fascinating Jaigarh Fort are the water channels built inside it that are all part of the rainwater harvesting system. There are a total of 3 underground tanks at the fort and the largest of them had the capacity to store 60,00,000 gallons of water. Thus, it was clear that proper arrangements were in place to store essentials during times of war.
Jaigarh fort is also home to a striking museum. The museum has an extraordinary collection of armoury used during that period. This collection includes swords, shields, guns, muskets and cannon balls. Some old photographs of Jaipur's rulers and military generals are also on display in the museum.
In addition, Shubhat Niwas, the meeting hall of the warriors, acts as a storehouse of the precious items of Rajput warriors. One can imagine Rajput warriors meeting and devising military strategies in this hall, amidst the historical relics and weaponry displayed here.
The flag of the Jaipur royal family is hoisted at the top of the watchtower of the fort.
