Each community in India has its own special type of cuisines. The food habits of Jharkhand tell us how the cuisines of the state has evolved over centuries, under the influence of different cultures and regimes, which have left their indelible influences on this verdant land.
In Jharkhand, there is a healthy mix of vegetarians and non-vegetarians; however in terms of numbers, the former seem to outnumber the latter. Rice and wheat are the staple diets of the state of Jharkhand. Vegetables are grown in plenty and through culinary journeys, they are translated into a variety of delectable dishes, geared to induce assorted palates. The typical meal of Jharkhand includes phulka, rice, dal, tarkari (sabji) and pickles of different varieties.

However, the typical meal or the thali changes its contents of tarkari according to the seasons. It is well known that the seasons change for four times in a year, and with the seasons, changes the contents of the thali.
The outstanding feature of the cuisines of Jharkhand is the 'chhonka' (tadka) along with the 'panchforan' (it is a mixture of five seeds namely: sarson, saunf, ajwain, methi and mangraila).

| The people here like to do 'bhoonjana' to their food items. Bhoonjana means to give a light frying to the food items. The cuisines of Jharkhand are very colorful and particularly spicy. They generally use mustard oil for cooking purposes.
Powdered gram called sattu is very famous all over the state, for making dishes as well as drinks. It is energy-rich food stuff. The tribal people of the state also have their own unique patterns of cooking the food. The main ingredients of a regular tribal meal in the Chhotanagpur region comprises of maize, edible roots, mahua flour, millets and tubers.
However, Jharkhand cuisine has more to it besides its ethnic eating habits. The land where the modern state of Jharkhand is spread across, was under the influence of Mughal rule, and thus, the Mughal cuisines have greatly influenced the cooking style and the tastes of the people residing in Jharkhand.

Thekua is one of the popular dishes of Jharkhand. It is also known as khajoor and is a homemade dessert. Thekua is a sweet dish which is also crispy. It is a dessert made by mixing sugar, wheat, flour and chopped coconuts. The sweet concoction can be carried along with you in long journeys, as it can be stored safely for a few days. Moreover, it is very easy to prepare thekua.
