The district of Coorg is situated in the laps of the great Western Ghats. Hence, most of its tourist attractions are situated amongst the mountains. Tourists come to Coorg to witness the beautiful Abbi Falls, Irrupu Falls, the town of Madikeri and Somwarpet. However, Coorg is also known as a holy place due to the presence of several temples. The pilgrims coming to Coorg pay a visit to the Omkareshwara temple, the Bhangandeshwara Temple and Talacauvery.
Talacauvery is the source of the river Cauvery. River Cauvery is one of the seven sacred rivers for hindus in India. Hence, the tourists visit this place to see and pray at the origin of the river. This place is about 4,500 ft above the sea level. Therefore, it is one of the picturesque locations in Coorg.
This place is marked with a tirtha kundike or the Brahma kundike. This is the small pond or spring from where river Cauvery originates in a form of a small perennial spring. First, the river flows underground and then emerges above the ground over a short distance.
A shrine and a big tank have been built near the kundike at Talacauvery. The pilgrims bath in the tank before praying at the origin of the river. Tourists can visit the two temples situated at this place. One temple is dedicated to lord Shiva while the other is for lord Ganesha.
According to a mythical legend Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh gave darshan to the great sage Agastya under the holy Ashwantha tree. This tree is well preserved and open for tourists display.
Hence Talacauvery is not is famous as a source of holy Cauvery but has an integral part in the religious beliefs of the Hindus.
The festival of Tulasankramana is celebrated with great enthusiasm at Talacauvery. During this festival, the pilgrims visit this place to see the sudden gush of water from the Brahma kundike. The locals consider this phenomenon very auspicious. The festival falls on the 17th of October.
On their trip to Talacauvery, tourists can visit the Brahmagiri peak. It is said that the peak was the site of the special yagna performed by the seven sages or the Sapta Maharishis. This place provides breathtaking views of the Brahamagiri hills. The tourists can enjoy similar views while traveling to the peak.
The Bhangandeshwara Temple is the site of the confluence of river Cauvery, river Sujyothi and river Kanike. Tourists can visit this place to see the intricate cravings and the copper roofs of the temple. Travelers can enjoy a cool dip at the sangama, but only through taking prior permission.
Talacauvery and the Bhagandeshwara Temple are at a distance of 48 km from Madikeri. Hence, tourists can use a bus or a private vehicle to reach this spot. The 90-minute ride is full of breathtaking views of the hills and the native vegetation. Hence, do not forget to carry a camera to capture this picturesque location.
