Kollur Mookambika Temple, Karnataka, India

Kollur Mookambika Temple, Karnataka, India

Kollur Mookambika Temple is one of the frequently visited places in Karnataka, situated at a distance of around 147 km from Mangalore. Kollur is sited on the banks of the river Sauparnika, surrounded by natural scenery. The presiding deity in the temple is Lord Shiva and the lingam in this temple is named the Jyotirlingam. Goddess Mookambika is also worshipped here. It was Adisankara who realized the statue of Goddess Mookambika during his meditation. The image of the deity which one can see today is the same which Adisankara had founded. The temple is situated in a large courtyard. The eastern entrance of the temple is known as Gopuradwara.

The Jyotirlingam in the temple is located in front of the figure of the Goddess Mookambika and it belongs to the ancient times. A golden line divides the two uneven parts of the lingam and they can be seen in the glow of sunlight that reflects on the lingam. It is said that Adisankara has installed the metal figure of Mookambika behind the lingam.

While looking at the temple one can find there the sanctum, the entry hall and the Lakshmi Mandap. The Lakshmi Mandap holds four pillars and on higher part of all those pillars there are some wonderfully engraved pictures of several Gods. Among them, the images of Naga, Ganesha, Mahishasura and Mardini are the most remarkable images. Some of the attractive images of Ganpati are fixed atop the entry gate to Lakshmi Mandap, Garbhagriha and the main entrance of the temple.

The devotees offer golden jewels to the deity after their wish is fulfilled. The Kollur Mookambika Temple houses massive collection of such jewels. The facial cover of Mookambika is golden and it is said that the Vijayanagar Empire presented it as homage to the Goddess. Jyotirlingam also has the golden face cover.

The main deity of the temple is worshiped five times a day. Pilgrims can also visit various places located in the vicinity of the temple. A popular waterfall called Arasina Makki is one of those beautiful attractions located around the temple. The Kodachadri hills invite trekkers and mountaineers and it is a beautiful place near Kollur Mookambika Temple. Kollur has good road connectivity to Mangalore, Bangalore and Mysore.
