Sringeri Mutt, the holy place on the banks of the sacred river Tungabhadra, located in Chickmagalur district, is one of the four mutts (religious sanctuaries of sorts) established by Jagatguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya - the great ninth century philosopher. This mutt is located amidst Sringeri hills. Sri Adi Shankaracharya was the Hindu spiritual head and he conceived of the philosophy of ‘Advaita’. For a while, Sringeri Mutt was the residence of Adi Shankaracharya. This mutt is well known as the ‘Sringeri Sharada Peetham’. An old temple devoted to Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of learning, founded by Sri Adi Shankaracharya, is housed in the mutt. Suresvaracharya, the first disciple of Adi Shankaracharya, was the first head of the mutt.
The mutt performs pious activities with deep enthusiasm; apart from organizing some services dedicated to the humanity. The Lord Chennai Kesava Perumal temple is another temple located at Sringeri, which is dedicated to one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu.
Sringeri Mutt is renowned as a centre of education, way of life and inspiring religious studies. Great scholars of Sanskrit come here for their research work. The authority of the mutt provides them with all types of educational facilities.
Accommodation in Srinegri is hardly a problem. There are private hotels and travellers bungalows which provide with an array of lodging options for the travellers. The Sringeri Mutt also provides the guesthouse to accommodate the pilgrims.
Sringeri has road links with famous tourist destinations. However, Mangalore and Bangalore have the nearest airports from Sringeri. The nearest railhead from Sringeri is Shimoga. The trains from Bangalore to Shimoga are available daily. Approximately, it takes an 8 hour journey from Bangalore to Sringeri. After reaching Shimoga, tourists can take a bus or a taxi to complete the journey to Srinegeri.
