Swami Vivekananda, the patriot monk and one of the foremost disciples of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa was a resident of Kolkata. His ancestral house located at 3 Gourmohan Mukherjee Street in North Kolkata is today one of the most valuable landmarks in Kolkata's pilgrim landscape.
This house belonging to one of India's spiritual messiah was in an utterly dilapidated condition. But thanks to the dynamic initiative of The Ramakrishna Math & Mission and the patronage of bot the local and central government, the grandeur of this ancestral house of Swamiji has been fully restored.
Today, not only does this house serve as a memorial to Swamiji, but there is also a museum, research and a cultural center inside the premises.
The chamber where Swami Vivekananda was born has been converted into a shrine with a photograph of Swamiji. His two younger brothers - Mahendranath and Bhupendranath too lived in this house and as a mark of respect, their living rooms too have been carefully preserved.
A visit to the ancestral house of Swamiji reveals the dynamic and many-sided personality of this holy soul. Not only was he a monk of the highest order, he was also an erudite scholar and an excellent musician. In one of the rooms in the ground floor, classical music instruments like Tabla, Tanpura and Khol which were used by Swamiji have been carefully preserved.
There is an in-house Research Center where scholars can conduct research on the significance of the Ramakrishna movement as well as other aspects of Indian spirituality.
True to Swamiji's ideal of "Service to the poor and needy", a philanthropic institute has also been set up at the premises which carries out investigative research on some of the burning issues of our times like poverty, unemployment, health and sanitation in rural places of India.
The entire process of restoration of this significant house has been carried out in such a manner that the original grandeur and beauty of this house has been preserved just the way it was at its inception a century back. An expert committee comprising of experts from the Archaeological Survey of India, state and central government, supervised the entire project.
