Kolkata has a thriving art culture, which is reflected in the number of legendary artists and painters that Bengal has produced. The legacy left behind by legends like Jamini Roy, Abanindra Nath Thakur, Nandalal Bose, Ramkinkar and others of their ilk is unmatched. The rich artistic legacy of Bengal today finds expression through Bengal's contemporary artists like Ganesh Haloi, Ganesh Payne, Suvaprassana and others.
There was a long felt need for an international standard Art Gallery in Kolkata, which would provide the artists and designers of Bengal a platform to showcase their brilliant work. With this aim in mind was born the Center of International Modern Art or CIMA Art Gallery in the year 1993.
This pathbreaking venture was possible largely due to the support and patronage of one of India's most prestigious media conglomerate - The Ananda Bazaar Patrika or ABP Limited.
Today CIMA is the ultimate place for the art conneiseurs of Kolkata. Its modern design has elements of renowned British and American Art Galleries and is much preferred by the art lovers of Kolkata and outside. The lighting, décor and other associated logistical nitty-grittys are top end. No wonder, it is such a pleasure to step into this modern Art Gallery of Kolkata.
CIMA is not just another run-of-the-mill art gallery in Kolkata's urban landscape. Not only does it host art exhibitions of renowned artists from India and abroad, the wide availability of space which is all of 9,000 sq.feet makes it an ideal place for thought provoking seminars and conferences on art and paintings.
Once you step into this artistic mecca of Kolkata, a fascinating world of Indian art and sculpture unfolds before your eyes like a veil slipping from the face of a beautiful bride. Be it the sparkling Bastar metal sculptures, the signature Sabyasachi Mukherjee bags, intricately embroidered Gabe carpets or the Michael Aram line of designer metalwares, you will be spoilt for a choice at CIMA. The sheer variety of artifacts is astounding to the first time visitor.
Of course, renowned American metalware designer - Michael Aram's range of products are the centerpiece of attraction. You will also come across stunning masterpieces from Kolkata boy Sabyasachi Mukherjee who in recent times has attained worldwide fame and recognition as a fashion designer. Apart from signature apparels and fabrics, on display at CIMA are the rare Assamese shawls, popularly referred to as "Muga" and the exotic "Pichwai" wall hangings, which is very popular with the art aficionados of the city.
