The Nehru Children's Museum located at 94/1 Chowringhee Road is a marvelous gift to the children of Kolkata and India. The museum meant exclusively for children was conceived by a visionary statesman - Late Shri Jugal Srimal who was convinced that the "Play Way" method of education which if imparted to the children through toys and games are much more acceptable to children rather than the sheer drudgery of class room studies.

As a result of his pioneering zeal to usher in a qualitative change in the way children learn, The Nehru Children's Museum was set up in the year 1972 and was aptly dedicated to the late Prime Minister of India - Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru or Chacha Nehru as he was popularly referred to by the children of India.

As you step into the four storied building which houses the museum with your children, a sense of déjà vu envelopes your child and as he or she begins exploring through the curious galleries, a whole new world of toys, dolls and an astounding paraphernalia of the make belief world of children opens up. The result - your child is captivated.

All that a child craves for, for instance, toys, dolls etc.. is amply represented in this museum. Of course they have been arranged in a methodical manner so that it serves a purpose - the purpose of educating the young ones.

Take for instance, the dolls gallery, which has a huge collection of dolls from 88 countries. Each doll is appropriately dressed as per the national costume of the country concerned and by the time your child has completed going through the dolls gallery, he or she will already be familiar with the dress code of a mind boggling 88 countries.

If the dolls gallery is captivating, the excitement increases ten fold as you step into the Ramayana & Mahabharata epics gallery. With the primary aim of educating the young ones about India's past glory and heritage which is best reflected in the two epics Ramayana & Mahabharata, a series clay models have been used which are arranged in a chronological order, depicting each of the events which unfolds in the epics through the brilliance of the clay models.

Children often find the process of acquainting themselves with epics to be a difficult and cumbersome task not only because they are voluminous but also for the fact that there are so many twists and turns to each of the epics. But rest assured, a visit to the epics gallery will change all your preconceived notions that you harbor about your sweet little child. Not only will your child be in a position to explain the two Indian epics like a seasoned priest, the impressions of clay models depicting the two epics will forever remain etched in your child's memory.

Ever since the museum's inception, it has all along been promoting novel ways of educating children of India and that includes under privileged children as well. Be it the establishment of non formal education centers in remote districts to the annual children's camp which has been held for the past 20 years, the museum has always been at the forefront of redefining children's education and making education more attractive and fun oriented.

Today the museum is a living testimony of an institution's commitment to create an extraordinary learning experience that have the power to transform the lives of children. The museum awards scholarships to 170 handicapped and underprivileged children and the total scholarship amount is approximately Rs.150 Lakhs, which is primarily received through donations from individuals and organizations.

The Nehru Children's Museum has been sharing its experiences, their treasury of artifacts and the talents of staff, volunteers and youths to positively effect children and families not only of Kolkata but India as a whole. Needless to say, if you come on a holiday to Kolkata with your family and children, a visit to the Nehru Children's Museums is the perfect gift you could ever give to your dear children.
