The state of Madhya Pradesh has an array of races, tribes, castes and communities. People in the northern part of the state mostly belong to the Aryan race while a large chunk of the southern and eastern portion of the state is occupied by several tribal groups. No wonder, with such an ethnographic and cultural diversity, Madhya Pradesh, which is spread over 308,144 sq km, has emerged a state of many faces and a multitude of languages. Languages of Madhya Pradesh embodies an element of diversity, which is a characteristic of the state. Hindi is the official language of this state, and several dialects of Hindi, such as Bundelkhandi, Malwi, Bagheli, Avadhi and Chattisgarhi are in usage across Madhya Pradesh. English is also used in the official correspondences, and are spoken by the state's elite.
Urdu is spoken in Burhanpur, which is the former princely state of Sironj, also known as Tonk. Urdu is widely spoken in other areas like Kurwai and Bhopal too. In old Bhopal, a unique combination of Hindi-Urdu mix is being spoken, which sounds very polite to the ears. Besides Hindi and its various dialects, and Urdu, Gujarati, Marathi and Sindi are also spoken here, which reflects on the cosmopolitan composition of people in Madhya Pradesh. Besides these mainstream languages, Madhya Pradesh has several tribal languages too. Bhilodi or Bhili, Gondi and Kalto (Nahali) are the languages of various tribal groups.
