Due to its central location in the heart of India, Madhya Pradesh has a well established communication network with the other states of the country. It is well connected with the various cities in the state by rail, road and air. Transportation in Madhya Pradesh is quite impressive.
The major cities of Madhya Pradesh like Bhopal, Gwalior, Indore, Khajuraho and Jabalpur have airports. Most of the private as well as public airlines have regular flight services to these airports. The Bhopal Airport is situated about 12 km away from Old Bhopal. There are flights flying to most of the important cities within India from Bhopal. Bhopal is also a major railway junction located on the Delhi-Madras route.

The domestic airport of Khajuraho operates regular flights to and from Agra and Delhi. Apart from Indian Airlines, there are many private airline services operating flights in and out of Khajuraho airport. Since there is no railway station near Khajuraho, the best way to get here is to avail of the flight services. Local travel can be undertaken by bicycle rickshaws, bikes and taxis.
Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport is the name of the airport in Indore. It has air services to the important cities in Madhya Pradesh and India. Jet Airways, Indian Airlines and other private airlines have their services to and from Gwalior.
The major railway junction of Madhya Pradesh is in the state capital of Bhopal. The railway network here is well connected to major cities of India. Madhya Pradesh also has a network of well connected roads including state highways and national highways which connect important tourist destinations within the state as well as other cities in India. From the capital city Bhopal, major cities within Madhya Pradesh and outside like Indore(187 km), Gwalior (422 km), Agra (541 km), Sanchi (45 km), Khajuraho (387 km), Jaipur (572 km), and Nagpur (345 km) are well connected and accessible easily.
Road transportation in Madhya Pradesh is quite exhaustive. There are state run buses to Maheshwar, Omkareshwar, Gwalior and Bhopal while interstate buses ply to and from Ahmedabad, Aurangabad and Mumbai. Buses are the convenient and cheapest mode of transport in the city. Shared autos are another convenient way of traveling, especially to places where the buses do not ply. Taxis and auto rickshaws can also be hired as a safe and comfortable mode of transport within the city.
The most interesting mode of transport in Bhojpur, a small city in Madhya Pradesh, is to hire a horse carriage (tonga). However auto rickshaws, taxis, cycle rickshaws and buses are other modes of transport existing in the city.
There are major airports at Gwalior, Khajuraho, Indore, Raipur and Bhopal linking Mumbai, Varanasi, Nagpur and Delhi.
