Madhya Pradesh sports a vibrant sporting culture. Cosco cricket is a famous sporting activity in Madhya Pradesh. It is widely practiced in the Sagar district. People of Madhya Pradesh also like many mainstream sports like cricket, badminton, table-tennis, football, volleyball, swimming, trekking and hockey. Of course, like everywhere in India, cricket is an obsession in Madhya Pradesh too, and the cricketing heroes of India are virtually worshipped by the public at large.
Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare was established in Madhya Pradesh in 1975 to promote sports and youth welfare activities of the state government. Prior to this, promotion of sports and youth welfare activities were the responsibility of the Directorate of Panchayat and Social Services. Financial facilities are provided to the tribal groups to motivate them and encourage their interest in sport activities. The Gwalior-based Rani Lakshmibai Institute of Physical Education conducts certificate, diploma, graduation and post-graduation courses in different sporting activities and other fields like yoga science, science of exercise and sports medicine.
Sports of Madhya Pradesh also have their traditional roots. Traditional sport activities like gulli danda, pittu and gadha padh are still kept alive in this state. Many tournaments and competitions are organized for these traditional sporting activities to promote the new generation's active participation in them.
