The Mahalakshmi Temple in the city of Mumbai is one of the most sacred and revered temples that the city boasts of. The temple is situated at Breach Candy, in the northern side of the Malabar Hills. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Mahalaxmi –the Goddess of wealth- Mahasaraswati and Mahakali. As it is placed on the shore near the Arabian Sea it has a beauty of its own.
The temple is visited by numerous devotees every single day. You will find that the Mahalakshmi Temple has lavish designs, which are fitting for the temple of the Goddess of wealth. All the three idols of the Goddesses Mahalaxmi, Mahasaraswati and Mahakali are decked with various pieces of jewellery. These include pretty nose rings, beautiful bangles made out of gold, and exquisite pearl necklaces. The Goddess Mahalaxmi is shown riding a tiger and the demon Mahisasur is in tandem. All these give the idol a grand and imposing look. Apart from these, many other Goddesses of the Hindu religion are also found here.
Near the entrance of the Mahalakshmi Temple, you can see colourful stalls selling flowers, coconuts and sweets to the devotees. You will also find flocks of grey pigeons in the courtyard of the temple which are a delight to the eye. The ornate gate leads you to the Laxmi shrine. It is believed that the Goddess does not let the prayers of any of her devotees go unfulfilled. You will find people thronging in front of the temple to catch a glimpse of the deity.
The Navratri festival is celebrated here on a grand scale amidst much pomp and splendour. The temple assumes a different aura at the time of the festival. Then the entire temple is decorated and decked up beautifully. People turn up in huge numbers to offer their prayers. The idols of the Goddesses are also decorated. The air is full of devotion and sanctity.
Reaching the temple is also not a problem. You can reach the temple on foot or use the taxis. Railway is another option. You can also avail of the various buses connecting the temple to parts of the city.
