The tourist attractions in and around Bhubaneshwar are certainly its very special and majestic temples. Earlier Bhubaneshwar was the capital of the Kalinga empire. The history of the magnificent temples in Bhubaneshwar takes one to the era of the mighty Kalinga emperors. More than 7000 temples and shrines were built during the Kalinga era. Bhubaneshwar is a name derived from Tribhuvaneshwar. Tribhuvaneshwar means the Lord Shiva, or the ‘Lord of the Three Worlds’. Bhubaneshwar is considered as one of the vital spiritual tourist destinations in Orissa, and is popularly known as the ‘Temple City of India’. The prominent temples of this city are the major tourist attractions in and around Bhubaneshwar.

The Parashurameshwar temple, Vital Deul, Mukteshwar temple, Lingaraja temple, Orissa State Museum, Handicraft Museum and the Tribal Museum are some of the major tourist attractions in and around Bhubaneshwar. The Parashurameshwar temple had been constructed in 650 AD. The temple has beautiful sculptors. The Vital Deul is an 800-year-old Buddhist cave. Vital Deul is among the best illustrations of the Buddhist cave designing in India. There is a wonderful idol of Chamunda, an embodiment of Goddess Kali inside the Buddhist cave, which reflects on the pluralistic cultural fabric of ancient Orissa. The cave has a double-storied wagon top.

Mukteshwar temple is the most decorated temple in the city. The temple had been constructed during the 7th and 8th century. The elaborate carvings of the idols in the temple show the influence of Buddha, Hindu and Jain style of temple architecture. The decorated ceiling of the temple is a remarkable specimen of architecture. The Lingaraja temple was constructed between the 10th and 11th century AD. This temple is another of the masterworks of Orissa temple architecture. The 55 meter high temple is widely surrounded with intricate carvings and is described as ‘the real synthesis of vision and reality.

The Orissa State Museum is one of the best tourist attractions in and around Bhubaneshwar. Here one can survey the sculptors, stone inscriptions, Bronze Age tools, copper plates, palm-leaf paintings and musical instruments. For the art lovers it can be a fascinating world of handicrafts and manuscripts, which can be revelation of sorts.

The Handicraft Museum is located on the Secretariat Road,which is also a must visit attraction. There is a wide collection of folk paintings, horn toys and sculptors. The place is really worth visiting. People interested in tribal life and customs of Orissa can go to this museum. The museum concerns with the different aspects of exotic tribal life of Orissa.

The caves of Udayagiri and Khandagiri are 7 km from Bhubaneshwar. Both of these series of caves are archaeological treasure-troves of sorts. The Udayagiri houses 15 caves inside it. The Hathigumpha-elephant cave is the most beautiful cave at Udayagiri.

Nandankanan is a wildlife sanctuary, located 25 km from Bhubaneshwar. There is a huge range of animals and birds in the park. The main attractions are white tigers, crocodiles and gorillas.
