Historians say that Queen Kolavati, the mother of the Somavansi king Udyotakesari,
built the temple. She got a lingam enshrined. The 11th century Brahmeshwar Mandir has four smaller shrines at the corners, and two surrounding walls. There is a shelter in its Panch Ratha plan, and the reservoir on the southern side of the temple.
As one enters through an entrance in the high surrounding wall, one can see a small cloth-covered figure of Lakshmi. The temple is adorned with wonderful paintings. The lower portion of the wall is decorated alternately in Khakhara style.
