Nandankanan Sanctuary, located near Bhubaneshwar, lies in the emerald green Chandaka woods. The undulating water of Kanjia Lake adds a serene glow to the sanctuary. A part of it is also declared as botanical garden. The place is known as a habitat of the rare white tiger. Also called as the garden of Gods, the sanctuary offers excellent view of some exceptional animals in their natural habitat.

Some scarce species of Asiatic lions, Sangal lions, Indian crocodiles, langur (monkeys), mouse deer and Indian pangolin are found in the sanctuary. Nandankanan sanctuary also offers residence to a variety of colorful birds and reptiles. It is a breeding ground of numerous fresh water fishes and has a rich aquatic life. The doorway to the Reptile Park in the sanctuary appears like a cave and is shielded by a colossal model of a tyrannosaurus. You will get to see some perilous species of lizards, snakes, crocodiles, and turtles in this sanctuary. The sanctuary accommodates about 18 varieties of reptiles, 81 genuses of birds and around 67 kinds of mammals in its dense surroundings.

Nandankanan Sanctuary is one of the incarcerated breeding zones of crocodiles in India. The royal white tiger is one of the atypical creatures found in the environs of the sanctuary. The place accommodates around 34 white tigers at present. Lion safari and white tiger safari add zing to your adventurous jaunt to Nandankanan. Nandankanan Sanctuary also organizes adventurous excursions to the tourists.

Boating on row and paddle boats in the crystal clear waters of Kanjia Lake is an enthralling experience. Sprawling over 50 hectares, the lake attracts a wide variety of domestic as well as migrant birds. Some exceptional migratory birds that can be seen in the sanctuary are jacana, heron, purple moorhen, darter, cotton teal and whistling teal. The 620 meter long airborne ropeway carries the visitors across the lake to have an aerial view of this fascinating botanical garden. The garden also encompasses rare species of flora across the globe.

The sanctuary is open on all days except Mondays. Generally it is open from 7:30 am in the morning to 6:00 pm in the evening in summers. In winters, a slight variation in the time is made. The sanctuary is open between 8am and 5pm in the cooler months of the year. The best time to plan a trip to Nandankanan Sanctuary is in the months between October and March. Some nominal charges are taken at the entrance of the sanctuary. A special parking area is also allotted to the tourists. Overall, Nandankanan Sanctuary offers excellent restaurants serving delicious cuisines.
