State Museum of Orissa is one of the major tourist attractions in Bhubaneshwar. Orissa is one of the major tourist destinations in India. The foundation of Orissa State Museum takes one back to the year 1932. Its foundation stone was laid when Professor N. C. Banerjee and Professor Ghanshyam Dash of Ravenshaw College, two famous historians, initiated the job of collecting archaeological treasures from different areas of the state. At that time, the museum was started within the college campus only. Later in 1938, the Government of Orissa officially stated it as the Orissa State Museum.
An entry in the State Museum takes one into the world of past. It reminds the rich culture and history of the state. The State Museum houses a wonderful collection of copper plates, coins, sculptors and stone inscriptions in it. People get surprised here seeing some rare manuscripts written on the palm leaves. There are some old bronze tools, and traditional folk musical instruments in the museum. The Epigraphy Gallery of the museum displays some rare epigraphic reports.
After entering the museum, one can have a general idea about the glorious past of Orissa and the progressive present of the state. There is a wide collection of manuscripts made of palm-leaf, bamboo leaf, ivory, bhurja bark, kumbhi bark and hand-made paper. Various types of stylus are collected here in the State Museum, including garland shaped, fish shaped, parrot shaped, sword shaped and rat shaped stylus. Some of the illustrated colored and colorless manuscripts according to category can be found here. Manuscripts of Gita Govinda is one of the major collections of manuscripts in the museum.
