The prime attraction on wild tours of Orissa is the Nandankanan Sanctuary. This sanctuary lies at a short distance from Bhubaneshwar, in the ambit of Chandaka forest. It also contains a botanical garden. Though mainly famous for white tigers, it has nearly 67 kinds of mammals, 18 varieties of reptiles and 81 species of birds too. Currently the zoo has 34 white tigers. It has many endangered species like Asiatic lion, Indian crocodile, Shanghai lion tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, Indian pangolin, mouse deer and countless birds, reptiles and fishes.

Another of the famous sanctuary in Orissa is the Similipal Tiger Reserve. Spread across an area of 2750 km, the park is chosen for the Project Tiger. The project is about preserving the dwindling tiger population. This park has 95 tigers along with leopards, elephants, mugger crocodiles and various reptiles. Over 231 kinds of birds are found here.

Bhitarkanika Sanctuary has been protecting the estuarine crocodile ever since 1975. This sanctuary is located in the coastal area of Gahirmatha. This place is visited by giant Pacific Sea Turtles, annually from South America. Special arrangements are made to ensure the protection of the turtles, which were preyed upon by the local people. This place is a natural habitat of wild creatures like crocodiles, king cobra, python, wild pig, rhesus monkey, sambar, and spotted deer. This place has different birds like kingfisher, open billed stork, sea eagle, kite, sand piper, darter, whistling teal, sea gull and many more. A trek through this sanctuary can be a rewarding experience.

Badarama Sanctuary, also known as Usakothi Sanctuary, is located 48 km from Sambalpur. It is endowed with a wide variety of fauna including tiger, leopard, elephant, hyena, wild boar, spotted deer, sambar, bear, porcupine and a number of birds and reptiles.

Along the sea coast, between Puri and Konark, is the Balukhand Sanctuary. The fascinating flora of this sanctuary includes casuarinas, anacardium, neem, tamarind, and karanja. The prominent fauna is black duck, spotted deer, monkey, squirrel, jungle cat, hyena, jackal, mongoose and a variety of feathered species.

In Narayangarh district is the Baisipalli Wildlife Sanctuary, and 158 km from Phulbani is the Belghar Sanctuary. Both of these sanctuaries are rich in flora and fauna.

The attractive feature of the Debrigarh Sanctuary is the Hirakud reservoir. It attracts many migratory birds during winter. The fauna of this wildlife sanctuary includes tiger, leopard, gaur, sambar, spotted deer, sloth bear, monitor lizard, and chameleon.Satkosia Sanctuary and Sunabeda Sanctuary are also prominent sanctuaries in Orissa. Both the sanctuaries have sylvan beauty and excellent natural features, teeming with a rich variety of flora and fauna.
