The sports of Orissa are going through a growth phase. The Government of Orissa has introduced many sports associations and instituted many awards to promote sporting activities in the state. Many stadiums are being constructed in different places of the state to organize tournaments. A stadium has been constructed at the district headquarter at Angul, with support from NALCO.

MCL authorities have undertaken the construction work of a stadium at Talcher. Government has also constructed a stadium at Pallahara to carry a lot of sports activities, and has also developed many high school playgrounds for conducting sports activities.

The Orissa Cricket Association has been conducting state level tournaments to promote the talented players. The other sports associations of the state are Orissa Football Association, Orissa Volleyball Association, Orissa Table Tennis Association, Orissa Women Football Association, Orissa Hockey Association. All these associations conduct tournaments at state level and send players to participate in the national level competitions.

Angul District Athletic Association organizes tournaments at district level and sends the players to state level competitions. Various tournaments conducted by the association are listed below, which contributes towards the development of sports of Orissa in the district level.

In the year 1994, the association organized All India Santosh Trophy Tournaments at Angul stadium, in association with the Orissa Football Association. All Orissa Table Tennis Championship(inter-district) was conducted at Nalcoagar in association with All Orissa T.T. Association. It selected one player and gave him the chance to participate in the Junior National Table Tennis Championship, held in Bangalore.

During the fag end of 1995 and beginning of 1996, the association organized senior inter-district football tournament at Kadampadia and for the first time the Angul district participated in the inter-football tournament and emerged as runners-up in the tiebreaker. In the year 1996, Angul District Athletic Association's football team participated at the national level All India Kalinga Cup tournament. In the year 1997, with the support of Orissa Volleyball Association, a state-wise volleyball tournament was held at Nalconagar and Talcher town.

All Orissa Basketball Championship was also organized. The association also participated in the inter-district football tournament. It also organized women's football matches. This association is also promoting lawn tennis in the district of Angul.

It organizes district level tournaments in cricket, hockey, wrestling, carom, and bodybuilding. Apart from these, it organizes state level rural sports tournaments for women also. Coaching camps are also organized to give coaching to the players on different events, prior to their participating in the state level competitions. Angul District Athletic Association is playing a pivotal role in promoting the culture of sports in Orissa, which is sure to make Orissa a sporting state in the years to come.
