One of the famous cities of the state of Orissa is Puri. This sacred seat of Hindu religion is famous for the temple of Lord Jagannath (The Lord of The Universe). The place is famous for its historic antiquities and religious shrines. The Jagannath Temple dates back to the 12th century and it is famous for its Jagannath Rath Yatra (The Chariot Festival). Puri has many temples which belong to the various branches of Kalinga School of architecture. It has the most beautiful beach called Golden Beach, which is ideal for swimming and surfing. Every year in November, the Beach Festival is celebrated here. In the Beach Festiva,l the prime attractions are Orissa crafts, cuisine and cultural evenings.

Bhubaneshwar is the modern day capital of Orissa. The city is popularly known as the temple city of the eastern India. It has 600 temples which still stand gracefully on this land. Among the famous temples are the Lingaraj Temple, which belongs to the 11th century AD, Mukteshwara Temple, Parsurameshwara Temple, Rajarani Temple and 64 Yogini Temple, where 64 beautiful Yoginis (nuns) are carved in black chlorite. Near the city is the beautiful Nandan Kanan Wildlife Sanctuary, with its natural lake. The park has white tigers and migratory birds. Dhauli in Bhubaneshwara is surrounded by the brilliant greenery of paddy fields. An Ashokan rock edict is found here, which is the earliest rock cut sculpture in India. The sculpted elephant on the top of the edict connote the Mauryan Emperor Ashok’s conversion to Buddhism, after his Kalinga victory. Other attractions here include the Vishwa Shanti Stupa, the famous Hathigumpha (Elephant Caves) and Rani Gumpha (Queen’s caves) in Udaigiri, and Kharvela.

Konark in Orissa is famous for the Suryamandir or the Sun Temple. This architectural marvel was built in the 13th century. It is shaped in an enormous stone image of the chariot of the Sun, which is drawn by seven horses and its 24 wheels. This poetic sculpture symbolize the division of time in 24 hours.

The places to visit in Cuttack are Stone Revetment of Cuttack, Barabati Fort, Temple of Cuttack Chandi, Dhavaleshwar and Quadam-i-Rasool. Cuttack is a shopper’s paradise with its handicraft items.

In Jeypore, you can visit the Bagra Waterfall on the Kolab river. It is the most famous tourist spot. The Shiva Temple at Papadahanadi and the famous 32 stepped throne of Battis Simhasan in Nandapur are worth a visit. It is an ideal place for trekkers and has many sightseeing opportunities.
