Sprawling with lush, green, manicured lawns, streams, sloping terrain and mammoth trees; Buddha Jayanti Smarak Park was founded to commemorate the 2500th anniversary of Lord Gautam Buddha's attainment of nirvana. The park covers the major portion of the Southern Ridge and can be reached either through the Ridge Road or Sardar Patel Marg, opposite Assam House.
This park is special because a sapling of the Bodhi Tree was brought from Sri Lanka and was planted here. In the 3rd century BC, Emperor Ashoka's daughter took a sapling from the original Bodhi Tree under which Buddha meditated and obtained enlightenment at Bodhgya, in Bihar, to the island of Sri Lanka.

West of Rajpath, the Buddha Jayanti Smarak Park lies in one of the prime areas of the capital and is quite popular with the residents of Delhi. It is full of colorful flowers, green grasses and paved pathways. Though people of all ages visit the park, a majority of visitors are young couples.

Special Event / Annual Event

Buddhist sects and organizations organize programs and talks in the park. For details check with local authorities.
