Harballabh Sangeet Sammelan is one of the leading events in the cultural tradition of Punjab. The program is organized in the remembrance of Swami Harballabh every year. The sammelan is held at Devi Talab in Jalandhar near the Samadhi of saint Harballabh, in the month of December. This sangeet sammelan is the oldest celebration of Indian classical Music.
The first Harballabh Sangeet Sammelan was organized in 1875 at the same premises. The sammelan attracts audiences and artists from all over the country and abroad also. Swami Harballabh achieved a very tall seat in the field of classical music. He learned all these things from Swami Tulja Gir, who always encouraged him to perform art and music. Swamiji had a massive number of disciples and followers. He tried to pass on worship for music amongst his disciples also. Since that time, the place where Swamiji used to perform his art became highly revered for musicians and players of classical music.
The main aim to organize the sammelan is to attract more and more people for the development and support of classical music of India. There is also an appropriate program for the followers of music. There is a shrine at the banks of the River with the name Devi Talab. The Central Government of India has recognized the sangeet sammelan as the National Festival for Music. The concert offers a nice opportunity of listening to reputed singers from all over India.
Pandit Tolo Ram, a Brahmin from Jalandhar was one of the well-known followers of Swami Harballabh. After the death of Swamiji, he completely dedicated himself to raise fund for Harballabh Sangeet Sammelan and he traveled widely to organize the sammelan successfully. He wanted to celebrate the greatness of his teacher. Due to the efforts of Pandit Tolo Ram, the place has been turned into a vital site of pilgrimage for all classical singers and musicians of India.
