The state of Punjab is famous for its forts and palaces. The town of Anand Sahib is fortified by five strong forts namely, the Anandpur Sahib Fort, the Lohagarh Sahib fort, Asamgarh, Kesar Sahib and the Anandgarh forts. Today the remaining four forts have been ravaged by time, but the strong Anandpur Sahib Fort is still intact. The origin of the Khalsa sect has a close relation with the town of Anandpur Sahib. This fort tells the tourists about the valor and heroism of the Khalsa sect.
Guru Gobind Singh has laid the foundation of the Anandpur Sahib Fort. This fort is located in the centre of the town. The fort is protected by strong thick walls and an inaccessible door. Located on the banks of the river Sutlej, this fort is 40km away from the Rupnagar town. The unique feature of this fort is the deep well that can be accessed by using a steep flight of staircase.
The Anandpur Sahib Fort was converted into military headquarters of the Khalsa sect under the leadership of Guru Gobind Singh. The surrounding forts were used to store arms and ammunitions during the times of war. It is said that Guru Gobind Singh spent 16 years in this fort. This strategic fort has witnessed several military onslaughts from various kings. In 1705, the Anandpur Sahib Fort was nearly demolished by Ajmer chand.
During the rule of Aurangzeb, the tenth guru was ordered to surrender the Anandpur Sahib Fort. But Guru Gobind Singh, along with his army, fought for the fort and saved it from the hands of the Mughals. The valor and intelligence of Guru Gobind Singh has made him an important part of the Sikh history.
But in due course of time the Sikhs built a gurudwara at the site of the fort. Today the picturesque gurudwara on the hill mound makes for a pretty sight. During the tricentenary festivities of the Khalsa sect in the year 1999, a light show was organized at the gurudwara. The show depicted the history of the Sikhs and the rich history of the town of Anand sahib. The Anandpur Sahib Fort, along with the gurudwara, is a major tourist attraction in Punjab. The best time to visit the fort is during the festival of Baisakhi and Holla Mohalla, which fall the months of March and April.
The timeless beauty of the Anandpur Sahib Fort attracts all the tourists coming to Punjab. The fort is famous for its rich history and architecture. Hence all the tourists visiting Punjab should at least visit this fort to feel the valor and courage of the gallant Sikh warriors of yesteryears. If you are romantic enough, you can even hear their battle cries resonating through the mighty walls of the fort...
