Standing like a ship on the picturesque land of Punjab, the Bathinda Fort perfectly blends into the surrounding desert environment. This fort has been a witness to various battles and invasions that have ravaged the Punjab state over centuries. The fort played an important role in the defense strategies of Punjab as well as India in those days. It is an impressive fort, famous for its robust structure. It is one of the major tourist attractions in Punjab.
It is said that Bathinda Fort was built some 1800 years ago. It is assumed that Bhatti Reo built this fort, as the bricks used to build this fort belong to the Kushana period, when emperor Kanishka ruled the northern India.
This fort has seen various arrests and executions, but the arrest of Razia Sultan, the first woman emperor of India, was much popularized. Razi Sultan was arrested after her defeat, and kept here in confinement. Maharaja Ala Singh recaptured the Bathinda Fort in 1754 AD. He made some repairs at the fort and used it as a defense fort, for the protection of his kingdom. It is said that it was Maharaja Ala Singh of Patiala who provided this fort with its distinct ship like contour. Maharaja Ala Singh built two small gurudwaras to mark the visit of Sri Guru Gobind Singh. The king was a great follower of Guru Gobind Singh, and honored him above all.
The characteristic shape of the Bathinda Fort attracts a large number of tourists coming to Punjab. This shape of the fort perfectly withstands the strong winds prevailing in the desert. This fort is a fine example of the defense tactics of the Sikh kings. The walls of this majestic garrison, which slope upwards from the base, are strong enough to endure any types of wind erosions. These walls are of an immense strength, which is admirable. The fort stands around 100 feet, and its bruj or observatory tower stands 120 feet high in the air. Even though this fort is of this immense height, it is in a good state of preservation.
In addition to this huge tower, the walls of the fort have four large towers in each corner, with eight smaller ones on the wall. The large towers cover a circumference of around 291 feet. The tourists should visit one of the mightiest and intelligently built fort structures found in the state of Punjab.
Today the Punjab government is taking efforts to preserve this heritage site. Various internal repairing are going on within the premises of the fort. These repairs take care of the small damages that have affected this mighty fort in the course of time. The Bathinda Fort is surely one of the strongest and grandest forts in the whole of Punjab.
The Bathinda Fort is located in the heart of the city of Bhatinda. As it is a major landmark, tourists can easily visit this heritage sight, to view some of the breathtaking views of the city. This fort stands like a timeless idol, with the beautiful city of Bhatinda as the backdrop.
