Bhadurgargh Fort

Bhadurgargh Fort

The land of Punjab is popularly known as the land of the heroes. This state has produced well-disciplined, brave and loyal kings. The history of this land stretches back to the Harrapan times. This historic land is a home to some of the strongest and sturdiest forts in the whole of India. The glorious past of Punjab is reflected through its forts and fortresses like the Bhadurgargh Fort, Faridkot Fort and so on.

It is said that the Bhadurgargh Fort was built 123 years ago by Maharaja Karam Singh. The construction of this fort was started under the patronage of Nawab Saif Khan, in early 1658. However, due to some inevitable reasons he could not complete it. The present fort was completed by Maharaja Karam Singh in 1837.

The Bhadurgargh Fort consists of two circular battlements, that are enclosed within 25 feet moats, filled with water. These moats were 58 feet wide, and served as a preliminary hindrance for the invaders. Even if the invaders crossed this moat, they were faced by a colossal outer wall, which was located 110km from the tough inner walls. By building a colossal 29 feet inner wall the king made it sure that no invader could reach the inside of the fort.

Although the primary aim of the Bhadurgargh Fort was to save the people and the king, it was beautifully decorated with carvings, towers, etc. To build this majestic fort, spread across an area of 2100 sq meters, the king spent a whopping one million rupees. It nearly took eight years to complete the whole construction of this fort.

It is said that Maharaja Karam Singh built this fort as a tribute to his honorable Guru, Tegh Bahadur. The fort is also attached with a legend according to which, Guru Tegh Bahadur had prognosticated the existence of a fort on that location. To mark the honorable guru’s visit, the king built two gurudwaras, one within the fort, while the other outside it.

Today the Bhadurgargh Fort is in the custody of the police department who uses it as a training academy for young police officers. Hence, the noble work of raising brave soldiers is still going on in the grandiose fort premises. I

The Bhadurgargh Fort is located at a distance of 6km from the city of Patiala. Tourists can hire private taxis, or use buses to reach this historic fort. Many local tour operators arrange sightseeing tours, which include a tour to this fort. Tourists can easily reach this tourist place, as it is a famous landmark in Punjab.

A visit to the Bhadurgargh Fort is vital for the understanding of the military history of the valiant combatants of Punjab. A visit to this fort will definitely provide an insight to the heroism and valor of the people of Punjab, and this in turn can explain the reason as to why Punjab is called as the land of warriors.
