Govindgargh Fort

Govindgargh Fort

The state of Punjab has a long history, which is filled battles, conspiracy, and aqua. The forts built by the various kings and nobles in Punjab are a witness to the great history of this beautiful state. Forts like the Govindgargh Fort, the Bhadurgargh fort and so on are the witness to the bravery of the gallant Sikh rulers. The forts and all the other memorials are the part of the great legacies of Punjab.

Built in the year 1809, the Govindgargh Fort is an important heritage site in the city of Amritsar. Situated near the golden temple, many visitors are looking for an opportunity to visit this fort. Today the fort is under the custody of the paramilitary forces hence the tourists are not allowed to visit it.

The Govindgargh Fort was built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Maharaja Ranjit Singh was the follower of the honorable Guru Gobind Singh; hence he named this fort after his great guru. Standing outside the Lahauri gate, the fort was of an immense importance during the times of the Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

The Govindgargh Fort served as the royal residence along with the royal treasury or toshkhana. Maharaja Ranjit Singh was staying in this fort until his palace Ram Baugh was under construction. The fort was fortified with strong walls and a deep running moat.

The fort had three lines of defense along with several citadels. The emplacements for the guns were strong enough to carry the weight of heavy cannons. The formidable Govindgargh Fort was well equipped to protect the important city of Amritsar.

The fort had a huge main gate that was a formidable obstacle for the enemies. The barracks on the four sides of the fort reflect the western styled architecture. The circular inspection gallery built around the fort protected the forts from surprise attacks. In cases of emergencies, the underground escape outlets were useful. The Govindgargh Fort is one of those forts to witness the longest period of Sikh history.

In around 1846, the British army took over the Govindgargh Fort. In due course of time the army occupied the fort, after which regular maintenance and conservation was not carried out. Today the Govindgargh Fort is on the verge of destruction. The public of Amritsar is trying to declare this fort site as a protected monument and convert it into a war museum to attract tourists. If everything goes well, the next time the tourists visit Amritsar they can witness this beautiful monument with their eyes, and experience the valor and bravery that has gone into building it.

If the government allows the tourists to visit the Govindgargh Fort, they can experience one of the historic and magnificent forts in all of Punjab. Their trip will turn into an unforgettable quest to explore the glorious past of Punjab.
