Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, situated in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, is just 176 km away from Delhi. It is one of the finest bird parks in the world. It is also known as the Keoladeo Ghana National Park. Besides colourful feathered species, the park also conserves other forms of fauna. Along with indigenous water-birds as well as the migratory birds, sambar, chital, Nilgai and boar also crowd its landscape.
This wildlife park is sprawled across an area of 29 sq km, two third of which is grassland and scrubland, and the rest is covered with marshes. This park houses around 300 species of birds. A Shiva shrine is situated at the middle of the park, from which the park has derived its name of Keoladeo.
The chief attractions for tourists visiting the park are the wide variety of migratory birds coming from Siberia and western Asia to spend their winter. These birds include the wheaters, wagtails, larks, flycatchers, pipits, pelicans, ducks, geese, cranes, etc. and even birds of prey like eagles and hawks.
One of the nearby places of interest is the Bharatpur Government Museum. Not far from the museum is Bharatpur Palace, which is an excellent synthesis of Mughal and the Rajput architecture. Then there is the Lohagarh Fort, which remained unassailable despite several attacks by the British. Just 32 km from Bharatpur, is the Deeg Palace, which was the summer resort of the rulers of Bharatpur and has many palaces and gardens.
Within the sanctuary, there are distinct treks, which can easily be covered on foot or on a cycle, or you can hire rickshaws. We can also hire boats here. A boat trip early in the daybreak or late twilight is quite a rewarding experience. Do not forget to carry a binocular for getting a glimpse of those gorgeous birds found in the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary.
