The frieze-adorned palaces, the forts and the monuments narrate tales about the glorious past of the city. A scenic lake where the entire city and its palaces get reflected, adds a pristine quality to the place.
The name Bundi is derived from one of the chieftain's name Bunda Meena. The Chauhans ruled over Bundi in the 12th century. Bundi became an independent state with the emergence of the Mughal rule. The monuments of this picturesque place and their structural design portray the magnificence of the erstwhile local Rajput chiefs. Amongst the forts and palaces in and around Bundi, Bundi Palace leads the way. The Bundi Palace is situated adjacent to the Taragarh Fort, which is another monument which stands for its architectural brilliance.
The architecture of Bundi Palace showcases astonishing craftsmanship. Located adjacent to Taragarh Fort and past the market, a handsome wooden gate (known as Hathi Pole or Elephant Gate) would lead you to the stunning Bundi Palace. This structure in the vicinity of the 14th century built Taragarh Fort displays extraordinary workmanship and is located on the side of the hill, on whose top the fort is perched. The highlight of Bundi Palace, built during the 16th-17th centuries, is its dazzling and awe-inspiring traditional friezes. These murals would carry the visitors back into the epoch of Bundi royalty.
These murals cover nearly the whole of the turret walls. However, only Chitrashala, a segment of the Bundi Palace, is open for the public viewing. This segment houses an art colonnade or pavilion where miniature colourful murals are exhibited. These murals portray pictures from the Raaslila and Ragmala, which are associated with Radha and Krishna.
For visiting the other areas of the palace, you would need special permission that can be acquired from Maharaja of Bundi's secretary. Taking photographs is not permissible at Bundi Palace. Bundi Palace gets illuminated with lights at night, offering a shimmering beauty that's a real visual treat. So, set a date with history at this Bundi Palace, which would definitely be an experience worth remembering!
