Sariska National Park

Sariska National Park

Located in Alwar district, Sariska National Park is situated in the Aravali Hills. This sanctuary covers around eight hundred sq km area, which include deciduous forests which are dry, grasslands, landscapes which are rocky, and cliffs. Besides wildlife watching, Sariska National Park is also the ideal place to go for camel safaris or visiting some medieval palaces. Sariska was given the sanctuary status in the year 1955 and attained the grade of a National Park in 1979.

Nearly ninety percent of the Sariska National Park is covered with trees known as the dhok trees. This park also teems with a lot of wildlife species. Sariska Park has a diverse fauna which include the leopard, tiger, jungle cat, jackal, wild dog and hyena, chital, sambar, langur, chausingha, etc. Sariska is also well known for its large population of the rhesus monkeys. The avian world is also well represented with grey partridge, peafowl, sand grouse, bush quail, tree pie, great Indian horned owl, etc. The Sariska National Park houses India's largest population of peafowl, harbors quail, sand grouse; Siliserh Lake, situated on the edge of the park is crowded with crocodiles. There are many water holes here, which the wildlife frequent in this park. Guests can view the animals in their habitat in the mornings and also in the evenings. Some of these watering holes are situated in prime spots for wildlife viewing. The Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary also has the Garh-Rajor temple, which is actually in ruins and dates back to the tenth and eleventh century. The ancient Shiva temples within the sanctuary, dating from 6th-13th century, also whisper a great heritage from its dilapidated present. The Kankwadi Fort situated nearby is also historically significant.

This park is located only 200 km from Delhi and 107 km from Jaipur. Although larger than the Ranthambor Park, it is less commercialized and has less tigers but a similar topography. The topography of Sariska maintains dry deciduous forests, scrub-thorn arid forests, grasses and rocks. The broad array of wildlife here is a magnificent example of ecological adoption and tolerance, for the climate here is fluctuating and erratic.
