Religious Tours of Rajasthan

Religious tours of Rajasthan can be a revelation of sorts. It can take you to some of the most intricately carved and designed temples, beautiful havelis and shrines. All these places are easily accessible through road, rail and air, and they help us understand a lot about the relevance of spirituality in India. The history of the formation of some of these temples is as interesting as the architectural and sculptural works engraved in them, for the posterity to ponder and wonder.

Shri Srinathji temple is located in Nathdwara, around 50 km away from Udaipur, on the banks of the river Banas. The Lord Srinathji, a form of Lord Krishna, is enshrined here. Here the statue of Lord Krishna is sculpted from a single piece of black marble. The temple is especially famous for its celebrated idol of Krishna, which is said to be a self manifested one. The temple also houses a 400-year-old Vaishnavite shrine.

The main deity of the Khatu Shyamji temple is Shyam Babaji, who can be traced back to the times of Mahabharata. The idol is believed to be Shyam Babaji's 'shish' or head which is said to have been retrieved from the holy pond of Shyam Kund and later installed in the temple. The temple is made of pure white marble which gives it an ethereal quality. Religious tours of Rajasthan bring tourists to this temple which attracts huge crowds during the Ekadeshi periods. Also a Shiva temple called Gourishankar Temple is located close to it. Khatu Shyamji temple is located 48 km from Sikar.

Kaila Devi Ji temple has an interesting legend associated with it. It is said that the King of Karauli, who was a great devotee of Kaila Devi, built the temple on instructions from the Goddess herself! Two very old idols are seen in the temple's sanctum sanctorum and beautiful carvings, engravings and intricate ornamental work cover the walls. The belief that Kaila Devi is an incarnation of Goddess Durga Devi has attracted millions of people to this sacred place. This temple must be covered in the religious tours of Rajasthan.

Dilwara Jain Temples are situated in the Aravalli mountain ranges, near Mt. Abu. It is actually a group of five temples which are made of milk white marble. The temple complex stands as an exemplification of architectural masterpiece with its aesthetically unmatched chiselled sculptures of idols, where even the smallest of details like the nail can be differentiated. The dance and drama engraved on walls are absolutely unique in their own way.

Shree Chandanpur Mahavirjee is a pilgrim centre in Rajasthan, located at the banks of the river Gambhir. It is well known for its natural splendour, interesting history and is considered a very important sacred place by the Jains. A 78 cm high copper coloured idol of a serene Mahavir Swami in padmasana posture adorns this temple.

Ajmer is an important pilgrimage destination in India. The Dargah Khwaja Sahib located here is considered the most important Muslim shrine in India, which gets extremely crowded during the time of Urs. Ajmer is a must-visit destination in the religious tours of Rajasthan.

The Eklingji Temple in Udaipur, the Jain Temples of Jaisalmer, and the Ossian Temples in Jodhpur are also worth many visits.
