Despite its desert, Rajasthan is rich in wildlife. It is home to many rare varieties of animals and feathered species. The state has a number of wildlife sanctuaries and national parks which can infuse adventure in your wild tours of Rajasthan.
Ranthambore National Park is located in the district of Sawai Madhopur. With scenic views, rugged rocky terrains, lush green forests, artificial water resources, it is located at the confluence of the Vindhyas and Aravalli ranges and shelters about 26 species of mammals and 280 species of birds. It is the only dry deciduous tiger habitat in this planet. Running over an area of about 400 sq km, it is one of the most important tiger reserves of India. Wild tours of Rajasthan must include a visit to this fascinating park.
Tigers can be seen wandering freely along its dense vegetation, drinking water from ponds. This park gives us the opportunity to see them in their own natural habitat. A wide variety of animals like hyenas, lizards, sloth bears, boars, etc. and exotic species of birds can also be seen, enjoyed and shot…with a camera.
Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary is another place which must feature in the wild tours of Rajasthan. This sanctuary is well known for its varied species. The hare, Nilgai aka the blue bull, wild boars, black bucks, desert foxes, deer and antelopes are some of the species which reside in the beautiful, dense dark forests of the sanctuary. The old fascinating city of Bikaner is located just a little more than 30 km away. The flora of this place is amazing and the Gajner Lake attracts a large number of migratory and exotic birds.
The Sariska National Park, located 31km away from Alwar, holds a reputation as being one of the most visited parks in India. Nestled in the Aravalli ranges, it is spread across a surface area of about 800sq km. It is best known for its rich fauna and flora, also housing one of the biggest tiger reserves where one can see the mighty creatures in their wild splendours, from the safe confines of jeep or campsites.
To see the fast moving chinkaras, the poisonous vipers coursing through the sands and disappearing into it, the spiny tailed lizards and the deadly kraits, etc. in their own land, the Desert National Park is the right place. The unique wildlife spread across its 3200 sq km landscape covered with rugged rocky areas, coarse sand, xerophytic vegetation, with 642 acres of just drifting sand dunes make it a great tourist attraction. The Great Indian Bustard and blackbucks are also seen here in plenty. The Desert National Park embodies the dry ecosystem of Thar Desert and its widely diverse fauna. The park is replete with sand dunes. Jaisalmer is the nearest city from this unique national park.
Keoladeo Ghana National Park aka the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, was once a duck shooting reserve but later converted to a national park. It is spread approximately over an area of 30 sq km. It is a place you must visit on your wild tours of Rajasthan. Thousands of migratory birds find a temporary home here due to the many fresh water lakes, marshes and shallow water bodies. Jeep safaris and trekking are possible in this park, which is also home to many species of the cat family, especially leopards.
Van Vihar Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the beautiful Vindhyan plateau and running over just 60sq km is a small but picturesque sanctuary, which is a haven for many of India's rare and endangered species.
All these exciting tourist options can enliven your wild tours of Rajasthan.
