As far as the air transportation in Rajasthan is concerned, Jaipur airport happens to be the only international airport in Rajasthan. There are additional airports at Jodhpur and Udaipur while the one at Jaisalmer is only open from months of October to March. Jet Airways and Indian Airlines are the two airlines whose flights operate from Mumbai and New Delhi to/from cities of Rajasthan, on a daily basis. Most foreign tourists land at either New Delhi or Mumbai and then take a convenient connecting flight to any of the airports of Rajasthan.
Transportation in Rajasthan includes the transportation facilities by rail. Indian Railways is the world's largest railway service and Rajasthan is well linked by the Indian Railways' exhaustive network. Almost all the significant towns and cities of Rajasthan are well linked with the four chief metropolitan cities of India - New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.
Rajasthan has a large network of bus services. These bus services can be easily availed by all classes of people and they are well linked across the state. Bus services from cities in other states to Rajasthan's cities are also there, an example of which is the frequent bus services between Delhi and Jaipur. The state government runs its own bus services, and in addition private bus services are also there, which are very efficient. Buses are also a major part of transportation in Rajasthan, and the fact that the roads in Rajasthan are in good shape, a bus or coach ride across Rajasthan may not be such a strenuous option.
Transportation in Rajasthan also features the taxis and cabs, which can be easily hired from most tourist destinations in Rajasthan. They vary from utility to the luxurious, and can be availed with or without chauffeurs.
For small distance travelling through the cities of Rajasthan, the auto rickshaws are the best option. They are basically an extension of the scooter with a canvas top, and at a time can take three to four commuters with sufficient space for luggage. Auto rickshaws generally operate on meter basis. Then there are cycle rickshaws, which are manually driven three wheelers. They are environmental friendly and are ideal for leisurely sightseeing. Tempos are another option to travel small distances. They are weird looking noisy vehicles, which are a little larger than the auto rickshaws and operate on selected routes, at fixed rates. Rates may vary in proportion to the distance covered.
