Media of Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu: A Cultured State of Being

Pen is mightier than the sword-so goes the saying. And the media of Tamil Nadu has proved this saying to the hilt.

During the independence struggle, Tamil Nadu media has played a great role. Notices and leaflets were used to spread messages during the days of independence, raising awareness and urging the people to revolt against the British imperialism.

Thiru Vi.Ka was not only a great writer, but also a pioneer in the Tamil media, mainly for the upliftment of women. His Tamil weekly magazine titled Navashakhti, which he started in 1920, was an important vehicle to promote his potent political and social views. And then came Kalki, headed by Kalki Krishnamurthy with the blessing of C. Rajagopalachari. Today it is a leading weekly magazine in Tamil. In this magazine various novels of Kalki Krishnamurthy were published.

Ananda Vikatan, a Tamil weekly, whose proprietor was the venerable S.S.Vasan, was another milestone in the development of media of Tamil Nadu. Kalki Krishnamurthy had an editorial stint there. The magazine soon gained tremendous popularity and became a household name in Tamil Nadu.

Of course, one cannot overlook the value of the newspapers in Tamil Nadu particularly 'The Hindu' and 'The Indian Express.' They have become part and parcel of the intelligentsia of Tamil Nadu. Now there are many dailies, weeklies, bi-monthlies and monthly magazines, which play their roles in the print media of Tamil Nadu. They include names like the Readers Digest, Femina, Women's era, Kumudam, Ananda Vikatan, Dinakaran, Malayala Manorama among others.

However, media is now no longer confined to the print media. Now the field of media has widened greatly, and its ambit includes electronic and cyber media.
