The Allahabad Museum was formally inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru in the year 1947. The museum has vivid collection which boasts of displays that are scattered across the 18 galleries. They include prehistoric and Indus Valley antiquities, textiles, terracotta, stone sculpture, weapons, bronzes, seals, miniature paintings, Buddhist thangkas, medieval land grants and much more.

The other picturesque objects that are included in the museum are the beautiful stone images, lintels and exuberantly carved temple pillars dating from the 3rd century to 12th century AD. The paintings portray important dynasties both during the ancient and the medieval time periods. The most attention-grabbing part of the display is the terracotta collection of the museum. This impressive collection displays the dancing and amorous scenes to bacchanalian feasts and hunts. The coin compilation has exceptional Kushana and Gupta gold coins, while the manuscripts are largely in Sanskrit that date from the 16th century onwards.

The Allahabad Museum also stores antiques from nearly all the renowned schools of sculptures namely the Kausambi, Mathura, Sarnath and Gandhara. The mind blowing and marvelous objects include the tasseled head of Shiva, projecting from a stone linga.
