The snow-clad Gangotri is the primordial source of the sacred river Ganga. Gangotri offers you an opportunity to explore the real pious and traditional India. The place has a 300-year-old beautiful shrine devoted to the deity Ganga. The shrine made of white granite is a 20 ft. high edifice. The majestic temple surrounded by the milky white snow offers breathtaking view to the tourists. The place also has a sanctified stone. According to the folklores, Raja Bhagirath used to worship Lord Shiva at the place. The Ganga originating from here is also called as Bhagirathi.

In winters, the figurine of the goddess is kept in the village called Muktimath to worship. The place consist an enticing Shivalinga called Jalmagna made of innate rocks. The Shivalinga can be seen only in winters. Going 18 km down the hill from Gangotri, you will find an enchanting place called Goumukh. The place is situated 4200m above the sea level. Bhojvasa and Cheedvasa, located 22 km and 28 km respectively from Gangotri, are two enchanting sites to visit in the region.

The Nandanvan has a 6 km long route tread by many trekkers. Across the enormous glacier of Gangotri, lies the Sylvan Tapovan. The emerald green Tapovan surrounds the Shivalinga peak. Klindikhal and Vasuki Taal are the nearest sites that can be visited while on a tour to Gangotri. Gangotri offers a gorgeous view of some other enthralling places like Dodi Taal Lake, the Kedamath Trek in Gangotri, Kedar Taal, Uttar Kashi and Nachiketa Taal. The cool summers and cold winters keep the milieu of the place quite refreshing and pleasant. The temple gates are open only in the months of from November to May.

The place is best suited for mountaineering, trekking and rock climbing. The waters of Ganges around Gangotri are famous for rafting activities. The place is famous for other water sports as well. The Jolly Grant, 26 km from Rishikesh serves as the nearest airport to Gangotri. The railway station that is the nearest to Gangotri is located at Rishikesh. The place is well connected with Tehri Garhwal, Uttar Kashi, Rishikesh and many other Indian cities by road. Just 250 km from Rishikesh, 150 km from Uttar Kashi and 300 km from Dehradun, Gangotri is easily accessible by all means of transport.

The hotels in Gangotri offer budget lodgings facility to the tourists. Numerous Dharamshalas are also available at the place. A trip to Gangotri is a must for the pious devotee.
