Yamunotri lies 3235 m above the sea level and is one of the most holy places included in the revered Char Dhams. The place is the primordial source of the river Yamuna which is considered a sacred river by the Indians. The river begins from the glacier called Champasar which lies just 1 km from the Temple. The glacier lies at an altitude of 4421 m and just 1 km away from the temple. Yamunotri is easily accessible from Barkot and Musoorie as well.
The place holds a lot of importance in the Hindu mythology. According the folklores, the place was the dwelling of Asit Muni, a sage in ancient times. The springs of hot water at Yamunotri are a major source of attraction for the tourists. The springs are said to contain remedial properties. The worshippers prepare potatoes and rice in the boiling waters of the springs. Yamunotri is a great trekking route to the mountaineers, rock climbers and trekkers.
The shrine of deity Yamuna erected by Maharani Gularia is the major attraction for the tourists. The doors of the shrine are closed from November to May due to excessive cold and danger of heavy rainfall and land slides at the place. The Lakhamandal lies 75 km from the Kempty falls. The Lakhamandal beautifully resides on the road connecting Mussoorie and Yamunotri. According to the folklores, the Kaurvas build the place for Pandavas with a conniving plan of killing them at the place.
Surya kund is one of the thermal springs with a temperature of 190 f. The worshippers boil potatoes and rice at the place to offer it to the Goddess in the shrine. At the entrance of Yamunotri shrine, an enormous rock pilaster called Divya Shila welcomes the worshippers. Devotees can have an invigorating bath at a thermal spring called Jankichatti.
The convergence of River Yamuna and Hanuman Ganga forms the opening of Dodi Tal trek. To reach Yamunotri shrine, pilgrims can hire palanquins or ponies available there. Their rates are decided by district magistrate prior to every Yatra season. Beside the riverbed of Yamuna, a splendid scenic spot called Sayanachatti offers a spectacular view to the tourists and provides a trek to Yamunotri shrine.
Yamunotri is easily accessible from the Jolly Grant air field located near Dehradun. The place is also easily accessible by rail route from Dehradun and Rishikesh. Tehri, Dharasu, Dehradun and Rishikesh also offer excellent road route to Hanumanchatti. A trip to the place offers peace of mind for both body and soul.
