Religious tours of Varanasi

The religious tour of Varanasi is easy to began, but difficult to end. The temple tours don't seem to finish, for the city has numerous temples. In fact, the entire ambience of this city is steeped in religiousity.

However, even if you are short of time, some major temples must be included in your itinerary. The Durga Temple, Tulsi Manas Temple, Bharat Mata Mandir, Kashi Vishwanath Temple and the Kaal Bhairav Temple are some of the important temples in the city. The Kashi Vishwanath temple is considered the most revered temple of Varanasi, which houses the Jyotirlinga (shrine) of Lord Shiva. It is situated on the banks of the river Ganga. It has great religious significance for the Hindus and is thronged by thousands of devotees from all over the globe. Even a glimpse of the holy Jyotirlinga is considered very auspicious. This temple enforces no discrimination on caste or religious grounds.

The Durga Temple, placed at Durga Kund, is also called as the monkey temple due to the presence of numerous monkeys in the temple. The Durga Kund endows serenity to the majestic structure. The idol of Goddess Durga placed here is said to have appeared naturally. During the Navratri festival, the temple has a different aura to it. Another temple is the Bharat Mata Temple. This temple is devoted to the nation. This temple houses a map of the undivided India and Tibetan Plateau, carved in marble, depicting all the geographical features precisely. It evokes a sense of unity among all the fellow people visiting the temple.

The Tulsi Manas Temple should also be included in the typical itinerary of the religious tours of Varanasi. It is a temple dedicated to Lord Rama and is made from white marble. This temple echoes an interesting belief. According to it, Tulsidas wrote the Ramcharitamanasa at the very place where the temple was being built. The verses of this epic are inscribed on the walls of the temple. Close on the heels of this temple is the Sankat Mochan Temple, which is devoted to Hanuman, the greatest devotee and disciple of Rama. This temple is located near the Benares Hindu University and attracts its own set of regular devotees.

The Kaal Bhairav Temple is also of utmost importance as it is believed that it is a sin to leave Varanasi without visiting the temple. The wrath and anger of the Kaal Bhairav are also widely known, and thus tourists do make it a point to visit the temple. The Nepali Temple, also called as Kathwala Temple, is known for its exquisite woodwork.

Thus, the religious places in Varanasi are very enriching and enlightening with a host of religious destinations located here.
